*bringing awareness to all our inner dog circles
It's that time of year again. I am here with a quick reminder about dogs and cars. Please leave your pooch at home now, if you're running errands alone. Its too hot to leave Fido in the car without another human present. Please heed the warning. Thank you for taking time to read and share this important post.
Dogs and Summertime5/26/2019

Article #4 Dogs & Safety
Warm temperatures have arrived. It's great to get outdoors and enjoy the sun on your face and get Fido outside in some fresh air before it gets too hot for his walk, if at all possible.
There's a couple of reminders in todays article as summer approaches.
Complaints are on the rise and have been made recently during May 2019 animals are in distress due to heat from being left inside hot vehicles.
A gentle reminder to leave Fido at home 'now' unless there are two or more riding in the vehicle.
That way, someone can let Fido out and hopefully wait in the shade, if you have a quick errand to run. I said 'now' since 40% drivers love taking Fido with them to run errands.
Temperatures can rise inside cars in no time at all, even when the outside temperature is mild. According to the SPCA, ten minutes is all that's needed for the inside of a car to reach 102 degrees on an 85 degree day. In thirty minutes, the car will be around 120 degrees.
This leads to Fido being in distress, whether its dehydration or heat stroke just to identify a couple of risks and the worst one being he dies from exposure, if not relieved from the heat immediately.
BC S.P.C.A. contact number to report animals in distress is 1-800-622-7722.
When walking, it's suggested walk Fido early in the morning or evening if there isn't shade to walk in, during the afternoon. Dogs feel the heat on their paw pads and can overheat quickly.
Avoid peak periods outside in the afternoon when temperatures sore and the heat from the asphalt or pavement can become sizzling hot.
The safety tip to practice is if you place the back of your hand on the pavement and you have to remove it before 5 seconds have passed-postpone and delay the walk-it's too hot and best not take Fido out now, except if its a quick bathroom break.
If you have access to a big field, grass is always best-However, be aware of bee or wasp stings if your pet suddenly starts limping, favors a paw, or begins excessively licking his paw.
Plus, a walk or hike on a shady trail or run at the sandy beach can be great alternatives to the walking on the roadway or sidewalks.
If you’re used to letting your dog accompany you on errands, lose the guilt. Leaving him behind on hot summer days, Fido will be much happier, and safer, at home, with shade and plenty of fresh cool water, until you can take him out safely on his next adventure.

*Bringing awareness into all our inner dog circles
As a dog groomer, I see plenty of dogs. I saw even more, dog hiking. Both jobs provide the skill sets that allow me to go over their physical bodies as a complimentary service either during the grooming process or monthly during the hikes.
Sometimes, I found small growths that did require a follow up with the vet, while other times just monitoring was sufficient since it didn't do anything. As long as it wasn't aggressive-the risks were low.
When to worry about your favourite fur pal. Learn the warning signs that mean you should take your pet to the vet.
Any sign of change requires an immediate follow up with the vet or when you see a variety of sudden changes in your pooch such as, when your dog vomits.
Occasional vomiting isn’t unusual for dogs. Animals may vomit to get rid of something that doesn’t agree with them, but some vomiting should concern you.
For example, you should call the vet immediately if your dog vomits frequently or several times in a row, vomits blood and/or has a fever.
Severe vomiting could also cause dehydration or diarrhea, so seek treatment early.
Displays odd eating habits, it’s not out of the ordinary for your dog to skip a meal or two, especially if it’s hot outside, but any more than this should be a red flag that something is off. Two days without eating is a clear sign that your dog needs an examination.
Some diseases cause dogs to develop unusual eating habits. If your dog is usually well-behaved but begins raiding the pantry or garbage, you should take them for a checkup.
Changes in skin, a rash, allergic reaction, or tumour appears.
Excessive thirst. It’s important to know about how much water your dog drinks each day. A dog that drinks more water than usual could be developing kidney disease or diabetes. You’ll be able to tell if your dog is drinking too much water if you have to refill the water bowl more than normal, or if they have an excessive amount of urine, need to go outside more often, or have accidents in the house.
Tired and sluggish. Lethargy is a sign that something may be troubling your dog. A lethargic dog may be uninterested in playing, going for a walk, or participating in activities they usually enjoy. Normal fatigue or sore muscles can sometimes be due to high temperatures, but you should see a vet if symptoms persist for more than two days.
Sudden weight loss. Even in an overweight dog, sudden weight loss should prompt you to take them to the vet. Losing weight quickly and unexpectedly could indicate a serious health condition. If your dog drops in weight by 10 percent, bring it to your vet’s attention. In small dogs, this may be as little as a 1-pound weight loss.
A dog’s stool is a good indicator of their overall health. A healthy dog will have small, firm, moist stools. Dry, hard stools may be a sign of health maladies, dietary problems, or dehydration. Take your dog to the vet if they have any of these symptoms, worms noted in the stool, diarrhea for more than 24 hours, straining, blood or mucus in the stool.
Cloudy or red eyes, squinting, or excessive discharge from your dog’s eyes could indicate an infection or injury. Make sure you bring your dog for a checkup right away. Diseases affecting the eyes can progress rapidly and cause blindness. Medication can be used to cure an infection or alleviate clinical signs.
Additional Emergency Symptoms
Open wounds or possibly broken bones, such as from being hit by a car or other trauma.
Stopped breathing or unconsciousness
Repeated vomiting or vomiting blood
Seizure
Sudden collapse or difficulty breathing
Bleeding from their mouth, nose, or eyes
Possible poisoning from eating something toxic
Extreme pain, seen as whining or shaking
Hard and swollen abdomen
All of that to say this. When my dog Piper was sick in Oct 2020. I just thought, oh she must have gotten into something. Only she was sick again, in the middle of the night. Then I noticed she wasn't eating. Then about half way thru our day I noticed on her belly a rash developed. Now I am concerned things appear to getting more serious.
I contact the vet and book an appt only to learn they were booked until November. At which time my friend suggested calling around to see who could get us in sooner. My daughter was helping in the grooming room the next day and then we saw the scariest sign of all. A growth on Pipers eyelid appeared suddenly overnight.
Piper was still drinking water and I was grateful for this, but something was definately going on. Piper had appeared to be a happy, healthy dog overall. She has always been anxious, but things seem to suddenly come up with her on occasion.
Due to a dog’s survival instinct, they will work to appear healthy on the outside. It’s important as a pet owner to be observant and aware of the subtlest changes. You know your dog better than anyone, so if something seems wrong, take them to the veterinarian for a checkup.
In Piper's case, she was treated for a round cell tumor. I was told to monitor it until the end of 2020. It would either go away meaning it was begnin or it would become agressive and further treatment would be required.
I was relieved until yesterday, it was all left in 2020. However, it was Piper's turn for her groom & I found another small tumor on her rear left hock. I am not seeing any other symptoms at this time.
I will only monitor the growth now that I spotted it or if any of the above symptoms occur again, I will book an appt for an exam. For now, its one day at a time with my fur pal. Although, this has prompted me to look into alternative health care for Piper too. More on this next blog....

Anything to do with the eyes requires a follow up appt with the vet. In this pic, this tumour was determined to be begnin after a biopsy was performed Oct 2020.

I am so glad we are in a new year. This month I have the opportunity to share my experience, strength and hope with a new up and coming mobile dog groomer, while she is here visiting in Campbell River.
This is a beautiful time to give back what was passed along to me. However, the student is needed elsewhere to run and operate her business, so it leaves me still looking for a qualified helper. I know I got all excited thinking GREAT! we could always use a new groomer in Campbell River...

For those of you still trying to get your dogs caught up with their grooming I am so sorry for the delay CV-19 has caused. I am working on bringing in new dogs as well as maintaining the regular ones. That's why it is so very important if you can not keep your appt to please provide me with 24 hours notice as there is a very lengthy cancellation list now. This way, I can offer the appt for the next available dog. Thank you so much for your cooperation with this matter.
The only other thing I can add at this time is I am looking into building my online store next. Possibly, maybe, perhaps. More on this once I have completed my research due to CV-19. The gift that keeps giving.
Until next time- stay warm & dry!
Be well!
Cheers,
Lori

HI good morning. I hope anyone who found this new years eve (day) post to be happy, well and ready to ring in a brand new year. I hope and pray will be better, but seriously have my doubts at this time. Just being honest.
However, for some it may have been the greatest year of their life all the events set aside are looking toward an even greater new year with the seasons festive love, joy and peace still overflowing in their heart.
That's not who I am. I am the sort of person that needs to look at the whole year and ponder where its all going & then humble myself to ask for help from God above.
A Prayer for a Gift of Faith in the New Year
Lord, even though I woke up with the same troubles I had yesterday, I know there is great power in my choices. So today, dear God, once again, I choose to listen for your voice above everything else. Forgive me for not trusting you enough. Forgive me for spinning my wheels and trying to work everything out all on my own. Help me to truly let go of what you have asked me to release to you and to believe that you’re at work in ways I can’t fully see. Help me in my unbelief.

I just don't know anyway through 2021 except with Him, at this time. I thank God for you & the year ahead whileI look forward to serving the community in 2021. May God bless you and share a gift of faith with you too-so you know you are not alone today and everyday going forward in 2021. In Jesus name, here is to 2021. Good bye 2020. :)

There is good news and bad news. With new mandatory face coverings to be worn indoors I now have to adjust how I am remaining open at this time to groom our favourite fur pals. That's the good news. I am going to stay open.
The bad news is the grooming room is now closed to the public. I am moving towards drop off and pick up service only at the door. I am going to put a chair outside where you can remain seated until your pooches appointment time.
At which time I will come out to say 'hello' and take your leashed pet inside the grooming room for their scheduled appt. Any extra walk in service is now by appt only due to the updates regarding cv-19.
When it comes to pick up time the procedure is to ring the buzzer so I know its a pick up. Again no one is allowed in the grooming room. Please, have a seat and I will bring your fur pal out to you also please have payment ready.
I do suggest to continue prebooking since some of you took months to get back into the rotation. Its up to you. My commitment is to our fur friends, I am barely caught up from the first shut down-therefore, I am standing firm this service is essential.
Let's keep the grooming going-we are our pets voice. They need to stay groomed in 2020 and 2021 cv-19 or not. Thanks for all your continued support. I look forward to seeing you and yours at the next available appt.
Stay warm & safe,
Lori

I was told and see it's a particularly bad flea season this year. It's paramount you look into vet recommended and/or alternative flea treatments for your favourite fur pal before they become infested. Preventative action is sometimes better for everyone in a household versus going at a infestation during a peak period because a little hitch-hikers latched on your fav fur pal while out for a walk and made it into his cozy bed.
The procedure at the grooming room is to inform your groomer before booking the appointment so the appropriate sort of appointment can be made to get your fur love feeling better quickly.
Flea treatment appointments are done at the end of the day to avoid infesting the grooming room and other pooches visiting the grooming room that day. Flea shampoos cost a bit more, but are worth it because they are medicated and provide instant relief once applied and allowed to soak into your pets coat.
Whether you choose to apply an external medication like Advantage plus a flea spray or opt for home remedy's such as; some essential oils make for excellent flea remedies for dogs. Citronella, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, and rosemary will all naturally repel fleas.
If your dog doesn't mind a spray bottle, dilute a few drops of your chosen essential oil into a 300ml-400ml of h2o and spray directly onto your dog's coat staying on top of the flea infestation requires consistency and persistence and follow up until you get an outbreak under control.
Plus, the recommended maintenance like vacuuming, washing your pets bedding, bagging up a dog bed if you don't spray it for up to 10 days will help to keep the fleas off your pet and out of your home, bed, furniture. The victory will be worth it.
No one has to suffer, with the options available to fur parents now. Only decisions need to be made now to prevent that outcome of an infestation if you find even 1 flea on your fur pet.

This is a wonderful and effective product to help get your dog feeling better immediately. If you don't want to buy it to have on hand, your groomer will have it or something very similar to it. To assist in getting the flea infestation under control. While your dog is in for his bath.
You can follow up at home with cleaning and spraying all the base boards along with furniture. Any place warm and close to wear your pet likes to sleep is the area that has to be treated. Otherwise, if you do nothing the pictures below show the outcome. Your dog suffers and so does the family household. No one will be comfortable until the pooch and home is treated.
Your local neighbourhood groomer is there to help and support you through the process if you need to book Fido an appointment for a flea treatment. I`want everyone feeling better asap. Please let me know if I can help you thru the problem season many are facing this year. I am more than happy to get your pooch all washed up while you clean up your home, since we're all headed back in doors now that fall has arrived as well.

So-the investment piece of furniture you purchased is looking damaged and worn due to your pooch digging and scratching the leather sofa while you've been away. Then, as you ask yourself what can I do about this situation as it happens right in front of you. Ack!
Your local groomer recommends & offers nail clipping along with applying several tips below you can find your way through this issue.
Your local groomer recommends & offers nail clipping along with applying several tips below you can find your way through this issue.
What can you do after nail trimming?
While away, simply gate off or close the door to the area of the room whether it's a family room or living room. Place a blanket or cover on the furniture. There are custom furniture covers that can be purchased. Crate your pup, while you're out. Create a digging area outside and show Fido where he is allowed to dig.
Dogs instinctively want to burrow and dig when they are ready to sleep. They love digging the furniture, our bed and their bed. Knowing this, you can begin by redirecting him is going to be the best solution.
Staying off the furniture is an option. Place some aluminum tin foil on the sofa. Several pieces is a good deterrent. Giving your dog treats for hanging out on the floor sends a pretty clear message to your dog: floor is good.
Setting up time to cuddle on the sofa that way you can supervise the time your dog spends on the furniture will keep it successful. Thereby, reducing any chance of what they do naturally-dig!
Some leathers, look awesome when they get a little marked up. Other leathers, like Oxford present a stronger quality that can take being sullied by a claw mark. Since leather furniture is durable and easy to clean, most marks can be buffed out. A simple wet cloth can be used to wipe down and get rid of any stains left by your furry pet, such as mud or dirt.
If the leather sofa is clawed sometimes there are a couple ways to reduce the scratches. You can use a leather cleaner/conditioner and then find a shoe polish colour matched as close as possible apply and buff. This will reduce the noticeable mark considerably.
Bottom line, it's a risk we take when we decide to have a furry friend. We have to consider our level of commitment to both the problem and solution. Since I don't think its fair to say its the groomers fault-it doesn't begin and end with nail trimming.
Dogs are like children, they need our attention and look to us for direction-so it's up to us to set the boundary and follow thru with the training. Whether we do it ourselves or look to a professional dog trainer to show us the necessary steps to take to get into a real solution or just accept your furniture is going to have claw marks. It comes down to our level of commitment-that is where it begins and ends.
Feel free to contact me to get your dogs nails trimmed and be sure to follow up with some of the suggestions to reduce the likelihood of claw marks on your leather couch. Appointments are necessary due to changes COVID-19 have caused this year.

Is it over yet? Pant, pant. The “Dog Days” of summer began July 3 & ended August 11, 2020. The term “Dog Days” traditionally refers to a period of particularly hot and humid weather occurring during the summer months of July and August in the Northern Hemisphere.
Hopefully, it's passed for 2020. The few days that hit 30+ were enough for the dogs that came thru the grooming room. I am still getting the dogs caught up from the cv-19 shut down in the early spring, as with most local groomers.
However, there is always a chance for an Indian summer as we look towards fall. Until the cooler temperatures arrive, what are some things we can do stay cool and keep our pooches cool?
Well, my go to in 2020 is the puppy pool. It is great for cooling down both human and Canine. It's no different than a children's plastic round pool. The river or sandy beach are favourite spots, when time permits.
There are some wonderful shady trails to hike along in and around Campbell River, as well.
For another product, my suggestion is the cooling pad-which you can pick up at most pet supply stores. Based on 33 reviews, there are 20-5***** recommendations by happy pets and their owners.
The one down side to the product review is customers expectations the cooling mat should remain cool 100% of the time. Well, common sense is things heat up when in use and cool down when they are not.
What the pet owner didn't give their pet time to do was figure it out. They decided hastily they would return it for a full refund. Whereas, the pet could come and go once the pad warmed up and in time it would cool down again for him to return to.
As for the price its an average investment $14.99 to $119.00 plus change size appropriate of course, small, med. and large breed. The puppy pool was 2 for $15.00 during the spring-before cv-19 struck. However, my favourite is seeing the dogs naturally want to lay down on the cool cement floor in the grooming room.
They are so smart and know how to stay cool-when given an opportunity. Dogs & puppies will seek out shade beneath a tree, cool water for drinking-an extra is tossing in a few ice cubes. A bone to chew on versus throwing a ball during extremes times of heat.
Bones will keep them busy and help get some energy out, versus exercising during mid day temperatures.

How often should my dog be groomed?
All breeds regardless of hair type, length or style require regular grooming. Bacteria will build quickly on an unbrushed coat. To maintain a clean, healthy, coat, and prevent skin concerns, all breeds should be groomed by a professional dog groomer on a regular schedule of every 4, 6, or 8 weeks, maximum. By keeping your dog clean and free of any matting you are sure to be meeting his grooming needs.
Why do groomers always shave my dog?
Usually, because you are not meeting the grooming requirements of your dog.
All breeds require regular maintenance, all year round.
Long styles = 4 week visits.
Medium styles = 6-8 week visits.
Short styles = 8-10 week visits.
Natural or double coated = minimum of 3-4 month visits.
Brushing and combing a matted dog is extremely uncomfortable and inhumane, thus groomers will simply not partake in such activities. If you are not keeping up with brushing and combing properly at home, and you are not following the above schedule, then you may not be meeting the grooming requirements of your dog. It is safer and more comfortable for the dog to be shaved, start over, get on a proper schedule and stay on it. Humanity over vanity.
How often should I have the nails cut?
Neglecting a dog’s nails is a serious health issue. We would like to see all dogs have their nails cut every 4 weeks. Ignoring nails that are too long will cause strain on the muscles & bones in the feet. The toes will begin to splay out over time. The toes, feet and legs will become affected, as will the shoulders, back and neck. When the nails grow, the quick grows as well. The nails cannot be cut back past the quick or the dog will experience pain, discomfort & bleeding. Well maintained feet and nails is vital to your loved one’s health.
Did you cut the nails? They feel too sharp, I think they are still too long.
A fresh nail cut will always result a sharp edge or tip. We can grind the nails with our nail grinder to smooth them out for you; however, as it takes time, skill, and knowledge to perform this task effectively, there is an additional charge for this.
Owners should understand that a nail can only be cut as far back as the quick area. Cutting behind the quick will cause bleeding and pain, the result of which is a dog that is fearful of having the nails cut. To prevent this we recommend regular maintenance of cutting and dermal work. Failure to do so will result in nails that are too long, with long quick. Once long quick have been established, very little can be done by us to correct this condition.
Do you brush teeth?
No we do not. Brushing the teeth is a daily routine through your dog’s entire life, from puppy stages to senior years, accomplished by good diet. A groomer brushing a dog’s teeth every 4-6 weeks is doing little, if anything, for your dog’s health. We are of the opinion that this is a tactic at improving profit margins in grooming salons. This, in our opinion, creates a sense of false care & maintenance for dog owners. We, therefore, do not partake in this service and encourage all dog owners to investigate dental procedures performed at your veterinarian’s office.
At what age can I get my puppy groomed?
We typically prefer to see a puppy shortly after his or her last vaccination. If you wait until your puppy is 10 months, you’ve waited too long, regardless of the breed. If he’s 10 weeks, it’s too soon.
Your puppy’s first grooming is likely it’s most important grooming of its entire life because it sets the expectation for future grooming. All owners are wise to plan that first visit carefully. We prefer puppy’s first groom to be more of an introductory grooming rather than a full hair or scissor cut.
How long will my dog be at your salon?
Typically, we endeavour to return your dog to you within 2-3 hours. Some days we are ahead of our goals other days we fall short. Regardless, all staff work diligently, quickly, safely and with kindness to ensure that no dog is with us for too long. An hour and a half is perfect but that is only achieved when we see your dog on a regular schedule of 6-8 weeks.
Several common factors delay us in achieving our goal:
◾the behaviour of your dog;
◾did you allow your dog an opportunity to have a potty time before drop off?
◾how many times the phone rings while we are working, the details & concerns those calls bring us;
◾early/late drop offs. We are forced to stop grooming when this happens. It may only be a 3 minute delay, sometimes it’s a 10
minute delay. If 3 clients do this for the morning appointments by noon the day can run an hour or more behind. Thus why we schedule individual time slots for each client.
Clean up & disinfecting dog messes creates delays. Many folks would be shocked at the number of loved ones that are dropped off & have clearly not been allowed a proper potty break; We take lunch minutes & potty seconds ourselves to keep the schedule intact as much as possible.
Can I drop off early?
This is generally accommodated. Please note however, that an early drop off will never mean your dog will be started sooner or that you will receive him back earlier in doing so. This is a common misunderstanding. Each day is scheduled according to breed, style of haircut and of course temperament. Your day and time is essentially hand-picked specific to your needs. We ask that a courtesy call be made to ensure that we are able to easily manage a time change to your appointment.
Why does it cost so much for my large breed? Isn’t it just a bath?
Grooming large breeds properly and professionally is much more than just soap and water.
Large breeds often require two people to safely lift, carry and to calmly remain on a grooming table. The double coated breeds require extensive combing and often times de-matting. Even a Lab or Golden can take considerable time to remove the excess hair and dander from their coats. Dog grooming is never an effortless procedure and the larger the breed, the more time and energy is put into the job. Larger breeds are simply priced according to the labour involved in completing the work required.
How could my dog possibly have fleas?
Any dog without proper flea prevention in place will pick up fleas. It is your choice to decide if you prefer to administer medication from the veterinarian or adapt holistic and more natural remedies. The on spot medications that are commonly purchased in pet stores typically are not a product that we recommend as a method of flea prevention.
Could my dog pick up fleas from your salon?
No, he will not pick up any fleas from our environment.
Flea eggs, larvae & pupae survive in the soil, in animal bedding, in carpeting as well as upholstery. After eggs have fallen off of the host’s body onto such surfaces, it then takes anywhere from 2 days to 10 days for those eggs to hatch. Our floors are cement, we have no animal bedding nor do we have any upholstery. This eliminates the environmental conditions required for flea eggs to survive. Our cleaning and disinfecting routine at the salon is strict and extremely regimented to prevent the spread of any bacteria, fungus, disease or any type of potential irritant to anyone’s loved one. The salon is cleaned before the day begins, during the work day as well a complete and thorough cleaning at the end of each day. We do our best to ensure that any potential hazards are removed from our environment to protect your pet as well as our staff.
What is the procedure if you do find fleas on someone’s dog?
The dog is immediately given a flea bath. This process completely eliminates all live fleas on the dog’s body. The bathing system is run through a cleaning and disinfecting process, which is a two stage process, further eliminating chance of fleas escaping. The shop will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. All towels that are used on the animal are immediately put in the washing machine and are washed and dried. Our vacuum is emptied and the contents is stored in a bin outside. When the owner arrives to pick up their dog we inform them that a flea or fleas were discovered. We then encourage the owner to implement a flea preventative program with their veterinarian as soon as possible. A note is made on the customer’s profile that fleas were discovered. We charge an additional fee as this procedure is lengthy and does create acute time delays to our schedule.
Do you require my dog to have a kennel cough vaccine?
We believe that this is completely up to each individual owner to vaccinate or not. We are of the opinion that the kennel cough, being an air born virus, can be contracted easily in any environment. A dog with the virus can pass it along to any dog, whether they are in the neighbourhood, the park, the pet store or the vet office. Grooming salons and boarding kennels do not because the virus, an animal with a compromised immune system is where the issue is. Provided that the dog’s immune system is not compromised, we are of the opinion that there is no reason why their body should not be able to ward off the virus. Should a dog pick up the virus, we believe that owners should investigate why the immune system is perhaps not responding as it should naturally do. We do not feel that this is an issue that can be effectively policed. We encourage all dog owners to be diligent with research and continuing education regarding their dog’s health.
