Bringing awareness into all our inner dog circles
Personally, I would like to rename the business hair of the dog-I am always covered in hair. Only I am invested in my original name. Maybe that's what this blog is about. I can finally share how I got here and where I see everything going now.
Originally, my business model was to hike my 2- 6 pack of dogs in the outback where I trained with Natalie over the years Mon-Fri and groom them as they needed, on a 6-8 week rotation.
Plus, provide a space where I could board a couple of the pooches if their owners were going away. It was about developing close personal relationship with both human and hound-although, the dogs were my main focus.
This was a beautiful business model. I loved to hike outdoors with Natalie and the dirty dog pack-it was the best time in my life, as I finished all my courses and received my certificates things were coming together.
I could finally set my own hours-2 hikes per day 1 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. Just 6 dogs per hike. This was life I wanted to live. I lived in this great little place where I was going to have my launch party and invite everyone I knew to spread the word I was open for business once my municipal license was approved or so I thought.
That was the next step-when it all came crashing down on me. I mean my life was in ruins. Once I learned my housing was illegal-the only thing I would be doing was packing.
I was not going to put any dog under my care at risk in any way-what I mean by this is, I wasn't about operate with the knowledge that I somehow discovered, the actual building permit needed to occupy my suite was never applied for. What???????
So-when I learned this I had to read the municipal bylaws regarding everything I was about to do-to learn if I had proceeded and anything happened-I could be charged under the Criminal Code of Canada. I would liable-even though the homeowner never applied for the occupancy permit, water, electrical, sewage, gas, or the building permit.
I couldn't even leave my own dog unattended in the house due to the faulty electrical wiring that blew the circuit breakers in the main house, which was the whole point of moving there. To help my own dog finally work thru her own anxiety and it worsened as we never got to work on it there.
What I was faced with was having to move-yet my entire budget got me to this very point. I had exhausted all my savings. Being unable to launch my business my income could not grow and now I was looking at moving expenses, damage deposits, pet deposits, hook up fees and everything else that goes hand in hand with moving. ack!
I had used cleaning to pay for everything up until that point and was burned out from that work. I had networked with alot of the customers I had cleaned for and they were waiting. Waiting for me to become fully operational. Only my 5 year plan didn't have a back up plan.
The 2 year plan was once I was up and running, I would save my earning for 2 years and have a down payment ready for a hunk of land and build my tiny house on it. Then, this is where I could turn it into a family business by operating a doggie daycare-with daily hikes, boarding and grooming.
That was the dream.
Now-after I managed to get thru all that-I had to move away as I was priced out of the housing market all together and start over. I stayed with family for a number of months while I started to net work and meet some people here-eventually, I would make the right connections and get on my feet, for the moment.
Since that is when Covid-19 struck-my next business model was crushed. I had built up some clientele. I was booked as a dog/house sitter while growing my dog walking/hiking & grooming business one dog at a time. I was booked until September.
I know I am not the only one who was struck down-all have suffered thru this thing. The business I was working out of Hounds Hangout closed permanently-gone. A huge loss for the community of Campbell River.
I would have considered just taking over the doggie daycare, only the owners want to sell. Who can blame them? Given all that has happened. As we are all facing uncertain times. I don't know where everything is going, I just know I will keep going. No matter what.
I am in the pursuit of happiness which would seems to me comes by way of perseverance. Just don't give up and you will get there-keep going. Rest if you must, but don't quit. EVER! It will change, it will get better and we will get thru all of it to see where the new normal take us.
Until next time,
Be good to yourself,
Cheers,
Lori & Piper

Bringing awareness into all our inner dog circles
Just a quick update-many apologies that in light of covid19 I have been unable to groom under the same procedures I was trained under. I hope to be fully up and running by August. Please be patient-the weekly clean is now done in between grooms and takes up a lot of time each day therefore I am unable to groom as many dogs at this time.
I will be open for nail trims full groom and offer to share the grooming if you would like to know more about it, please let me know. I would be more than happy to share this procedure with you.
Otherwise, please stay safe during this time and know I look forward to serving you and your pooch in the coming weeks.

Bringing awareness into all our inner dog circles
Sorry for such a long paws in between posts. I am literally non stop in all areas of life right now. I know many folks and families where shut down during the covid19 crisis. However, I wasn't. That's not to say I was working the whole time on business, but working on so many other things as well.
While learning all about covid19 and how it affected life overall, there was collateral damage with the store fronts as I am now seeing. As happy as I am to see the open for business signs popping up. Sadly, some are coming down.
I was informed the grooming room in "Woofy's" is reopening but without the friendly faces we have known to groom the towns dogs-I will miss Danika even though Far Fetched Grooming is just relocating to Courtenay, we enjoyed popping into to say 'hi' when we went to pick up Piper's treats. Sad face-
I am relieved, Jazzy is still present to clean Piper's teeth this week, as with most of the staff returning to Woofy's as we discover life post covid19.
I had to pack up gear from Hounds Hangout last week, as well. It didn't make the reopening. As much as I am very sad Ryan closed I remain as grateful for my humble beginnings there and the break I needed to meet all the dog parents and their fur pups in Campbell River.
Working from home as proven to be a good decision, but miss the hounds and scrubbing all the dirty dogs clean again at the daycare. I believe it's a huge loss for the community that we will all feel for a long time.
Perhaps, someone more financially secure will come along and reopen a new daycare, until then I am grateful to still be in the industry the way I am. Happy to serve 4 paws anytime. Please feel free to contact me if you have grooming questions and concerns anytime...I am not in it just 9-5 mon-fri. You can call, text, & email anytime. If I am around I will gladly respond in realtime.

Bringing awareness into all our inner dog circles.....
I wanted to take a moment and share that I hope you and yours are well going thru the life altering experience that came in the name of CoVid19.
From the last blog to today-everything changed. I am still swept up by the changes this new way of life I began living just a short time ago, nothing remains the same except for my love of grooming, love of family & fur-(friends).
I had just launched pet sitting/boarding from home while transitioning to work from home when all of this hit. SO, one of the options that became available to society was to work from home.
That's all I needed to know to keep digging and learn what was now expected of me to keep you, me, our dogs and society as a whole, 'safe' during this crisis. There is an article linked below where the Health Minister has made several recommendations that I am following. It goes without saying if I have symptoms there will be no contact and appointments cancelled. I ask the same in return. Its easier to reschedule-than run the risk of infection. As long as both parties are healthy, grooming can remain operational.
What I have implemented is the following. I meet you with your pooch outside. We practice social distancing and do a leash hand off on the driveway-while I finish pulling together a gated side entrance where your dog will be secured using two gates in the long term.
This is basically going to become a drop/off pick up service. For anyone with mobility issues or health issues I am happy to provide a pick up and drop off service so you don't have to travel.
This is all a work in progress. I thank you for your patience while we all work together to find our new normal.
Grooms are going well working from home. After each groom, I clean plus disinfect then sanitize all the equipment, table, tub, towels, face cloths and rooms etc. Appointments are booked further apart so there is no cross over with people or pets to support social distancing.
I am happy with the procedures implemented to keep us safe as we go thru this together. Also, I wanted to share that most of the dogs that were attending to Hounds Hangout are adjusting well. Very little stress is experienced now. While rest of the hounds that have dropped by so far, were unaffected in anyway whatsoever....
Being at home is a very relaxed environment that we all benefit from. All the external stressors are greatly reduced. The pooches no longer hear the big heater or several large dogs barking as their humans come and go.
We all know dogs bark-but some of the barking dogs made the little dogs quite nervous at times. So-all that stress has now been removed. They are more calm versus anxious. Better able to participate in the grooming process and work thru any anxiety they may have completing each procedure during a bath and tidy or full groom.
All that I can say about this situation, is I believed working from home was the answer before this world wide event happened-maybe I was a head of flattening the curve intuitively. Hmmmm, let me paws for a moment and think about it?
I can only hope and pray if you have been affected by the times we're all facing that you will find your new normal asap. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance in any way-I am more than happy to help. Ph # 604-720-2394.
I have not been able to implement a new procedure for doggie daycare, boarding or dog sitting as of yet. Most reservations were cancelled until we are clear to travel again-perhaps its best to suspend this service-but if there is an emergency I am more than willing to provide care for a family pet-no dog would be refused or turned away unless it falls under designated dangerous legislation.
One last update-is Google My Business has a photo section on my web page where I am uploading my before/after gallery now. I was doing it here-but it became more efficient to use the google search engine. Please find the link below.
Until next month-stay Pawsative!
Warm Regards,
Lori

Bringing Awareness Into All Our Inner Dog Circles.
Hello my fur fans both far and near. I am happy to share that I am now open for dog boarding. This still requires a meet & greet along with paperwork to be filled out, but its now a bit more affordable, since there is no fee for this anymore.
Yay! That's more ca-ching in your pocket and another way to help reduce expenses when planning your getaway, holiday, or even an unexpected trip.
What to expect in a boarding situation-your pooch will be in the comfort of an open concept setting. Where I am, so are my fur pals. If we're home we have the full basement with access to a fenced backyard along with walking trails directly outback.
I am very excited to be able to leave from my backdoor to take Fido for a walk morning, noon or night. Depending on our schedules.
You can bring Fido's bed but there are two crates on site along with beds. I do suggest an old t-shirt of yours though. This way, Fido has your scent close by, while you are away.
Treats are allowed, but also provided. I do ask you pack your hounds food and medications if any, for Fido, as agreed upon during the meet and greet.
I am opting for 2 different dogs per night, but will welcome a single household of dogs between 2-5 max., if the opportunity arises. Generally it's just 2 per night and walks included.
I look forward to seeing this new adventure pawsitively take off. This is valuable service to offer Campbell River and needed too-Please be sure to mention it around town. Since word of mouth is how I grow.
Thank you and be sure to book early, since spots are filling up quickly.
Until the next post,
Take Care,
Lori & Piper

*Bringing Awareness Into All Our Inner Dog Circles
I just learned I lost the first year of blog posts I had written here on Making Tracks Dog Hiking Blog-I had over 20 posts created that were all one of a kind. I didn't have them backed up anywhere as I lived out the scene from Sex and The City where Carrie experienced the black screen of death, hard lesson learned.
I have an outline left in my mind of the topics I blogged about in the last year, such as dog safety tips, aggression ladder, hikes, paw care, holidays & our fur friends tips, along with getting snowed in Jan & Feb 2020.
All the content can be recreated, however this is a major setback. I need to create new content on top off what I lost. Which doesn't come without consequences. Since I just realized my archives no longer exist which loaned credibility to the web site as a whole.
This is all free content-but this year I was moving to an online store to help obtain the goal of turning blogging into a living.
I enjoyed writing every post. Bringing safety tips to all our inner dog circles.
This was laying the ground work before I built my online store.
I am just going to get busy rebuilding my blog-revisiting much of the same content before expanding on the new content & posts for 2020. With the main goal of now backing up my work in order to avoid this mishap from occurring again on my watch. *sigh....

Bringing awareness into all our inner dog circles
Soooo, it would seem we didn't escape ol' man winter after all. With the pile of snow dumped on us here on Vancouver Island I thought today might be a good day to remind everyone about the risk of salt and debris getting caught in our fav fur pals paw pads.
Just be mindful, if you catch any excessive paw licking or your hound is favouring a paw, something could be lodged in the paw pad. Trimming paw pads is important, but as well, our pooches need some fur for protection too. So, it can be a bit of a balancing act in between grooms.
I have seen a couple of dogs recently with debris caught up in the paw pad, which I had to clip out when the owner brought their pet in for a nail trimming & consultation.
My commitment to your fur pal is when you bring them in for regular nail clipping in between visits, while I have your dog on the grooming table I will trim the pads if necessary at no extra charge. All you have to pay is for the regular fee for nail clipping and I will do the rest on the (dog) house-.
I want to stand by my promise to share the grooming in 2020-paw pad health is important to your furry friends. This way, you know I mean what I say and say what I mean. Your business is important to me, but more importantly, so is your pet.
With that said-I welcome all dogs at the grooming room and look forward to seeing your pooch soon. Feel free to call, text or email to book the next available appointment or possible drop in for a consultation. As well, I would like to add I will be offering mobile grooming for small and medium size dogs beginning Feb. 2020.
Just one more way to provide a service for those who aren't driving and perhaps just had surgery and can't get out right now. No longer do you have to worry. I can come to you. Please feel free to inquire further about this service I provided before I began my adventure in the grooming room. I am more than happy to answer all your questions.
Thanks so much for stopping by. See you soon. Lori-

Bringing Awareness Into All Our Inner Dog Circles
Happy New Year Everyone!
I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome those of you returning to the blog and anyone new who is stopping by to see where we are making tracks in 2020.
The first goal is blogging more often to deliver a wider variety of content about our favourite pals. Along with vlogging some grooms. I still have to purchase a camera to begin recording the tips, grooms, procedures and such from the grooming room.
So, it could be another month before I have a test vlog uploaded on Youtube and links posted here for viewing. However, it's something I knew I wanted to do when I was given the opportunity to groom at Hounds Hangout. At some point, I hope I can provide a live stream from the grooming room, which would also lead into podcasts.
Again. this will take some time to establish, it is where I see the market going. I am going to follow trends to be able to bring the most relevant content to you and yours to stay ahead of the curve so to speak. If I may?
I am sure some of the topics may bring awareness or even be controversial. All I know is I want to get to the heart of everything this year and become a valuable resource for the local community and surrounding areas-along with the reaching out to the global network.
It's a brand new year where anything is possible and the only thing stopping us from achieving our goals-is a decision. I want to encourage one and all to check back here more often for new content and even join by subscribing for great content to be emailed to you to be the first notified of my new posts. It's free.
The other goal is to be the bark of the town-haha I look forward to serving you and your fur friends throughout the new year. Be sure to call or text the grooming room to book the next available appointment. I can be reached @ 604 720 2394. Feel free to email at makingtracksdoghiking@mail.com , as well.
Until next time,
Lori
