How letting the dogs lead equals regulation
There’s always a moment at the beginning of a walk where everything shifts.
The leash clips on.
The door opens.
And just like that, the dogs are ready.
But the trail doesn’t really begin until the pace settles.
At first, there’s excitement. Energy. Movement. The dogs move quickly, pulling slightly, eager to get to the familiar path. But after a few minutes, something changes.
Their pace evens out.
Their breathing slows.
Their attention shifts outward.
This is when the walk truly begins.
Dogs don’t just walk — they arrive.
They take in the environment through scent, sound, and movement. They notice everything. And if we allow it, they gently pull us into that same awareness.
Dog Tip: Start Walks Calmly. The first few minutes of a walk set the tone.
If the start is rushed or chaotic, dogs tend to stay in that heightened state. Slowing down early, even just a little, helps create a more relaxed and enjoyable walk for both dog and human.
